Jeffrey Alexander, who for many years has organized Astronomy Nights at Robbins Farm Park, recently scheduled four free public events, going through the end of September. However, the first one, which was to have been at 8 p.m. tonight, Saturday, May 20, had to be canceled at the last minute due to rain. The next event is Janue 24
The roughly monthly events are informal and fun for all ages, he said in a recent news release.
At each, Alexander plans to have at least one telescope out to view objects in the night sky. The best planets for viewing aren't up until close to the fall, but, nonetheless, viewers will have plenty to look at before then, he said.
On May 20, attendees who arrived slightly early would have had a chance to try to spot the thinnest crescent of the one-day-old waxing new moon. As the sun and then the moon sink below the horizon, the group would have moved focus to Venus and maybe Mars. Venus is showing a phase (about half full), and, with some knowledge of the solar system, the group would have been able to tell where Venus is in its orbit compared to Earth.

Dallin Museum’s Indigenous Peoples gallery.
Do you love art, and want to share your passion with others?
Arlington's Cyrus Dallin Art Museum seeks volunteer tour guides to introduce visitors to the museum. Tour guides draw attention to the collection of works by the celebrated Utah-born sculptor who lived and worked in Arlington for more than 40 years.
The museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays, from noon to 4:00 p.m. Tour guides work two-hour shifts -- noon to 2:00 p.m, and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Volunteers typically work at least twice a month.
Dallin is best known for the Paul Revere Monument in the North End and Appeal to the Great Spirit in front of Boston's Museum of Fine Arts. He also sculpted many iconic sculptures in Arlington, including the Menotomy Hunter and the Robbins Memorial Flagstaff.
In addition to being a sculptor and arts educator, Dallin was an advocate for Indigenous rights in the United States. Anyone interested in arts, history, museum education and meeting new people are encouraged to volunteer as a tour guide, regardless of experience level.

Volunteers are needed to lead tours of the historic Jason Russell House on weekends from June through October.
The house is the site of the bloodiest fighting on the first day of the American Revolution on April 19, 1775, and its walls still bear musket ball holes from the skirmish on that day. Contents of the house and its new exhibit, “Menotomy: Road to Revolution,” further enrich the story of that historic day and create a vivid picture of 18th- and 19th-century life in Arlington.
Guide training is set for Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m.- to 4:30 p.m. For more information, email

Please check the websites of places you wish to visit ahead of time since many are still closed.

More than 9,000 children and young adults are in state custody in Massachusetts under the Department of Children and Family Services. These young people have experienced abuse and/or neglect and are living in temporary situations.
The Foster Care Review Unit makes decisions regarding children who have been in foster care for six months or longer, assessing how well their needs are being met and what progress has been made toward establishing them in a permanent living situation. A volunteer from the Community is one member of the three -person panels that make these decisions.
