An Arlington driver known for his participation in girls' school sports died Saturday, Jan. 3, from injuries suffered early New Year's Day.

James "Jim" McLaughlin, 50, died as a result of injuries sustained when the car he was driving hit a tree on Pleasant Street in Arlington at 1:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office.

A notice posted by the Keefe Funeral Home said: "Jim was truly devoted to coaching and contributing to the development of girls youth sports in the Town of Arlington and neighboring communities."

He was the assistant softball coach at Arlington High School.

According to investigators, McLaughin's car left the road near 135 Pleasant St., went onto a sidewalk and hit a tree with such force that the tree was knocked over.

First responders had to take out the vehicle's seats to remove McLaughlin from the wreck, according to investigators.

Two passengers received minor injuries from the crash.

The investigation into what caused this accident will look at the vehicle's speed and other factors, the district attorney's news release said.

The Arlington Police Department is investigating. The Globe reported Jan. 4 that police, who said speed was a factor in the crash, are investigating whether alcohol also played a role.

The prosecutor assigned to this case is Assistant District Attorney Kerry Collins.

Mr. McLaughlin is the son of Nancy (Clarke) McLaughlin and the late Donald McLaughlin of Arlington. He is the father of Kailene McLaughlin and Kathryn Currier-McLaughlin. He is the brother of Brenda Miller Lyman and her husband, Ralph, of Billerica, as well as Tracy Medlin and her husband, Thomas, of Auburn; Donald McLaughlin of Arlington and Robert McLaughlin and his wife, Diana, of Auburn. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visiting Hours will be held from the Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Chestnut St., (Route 60, adjacent to St. Agnes Church), on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Agnes Church on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 11:30 a.m. Relatives and friends invited.
