Forty-five members of the Arlington Police Department recently completed interactive, scenario-based training using the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office's Mobile Training Center.
Over five days, officers were put through a series of video-based scenarios that focused on responses to business, community and residential settings, as well as calls in which mental health was an underlying factor.
These scenarios allowed officers to focus on the effective use of deescalation and communication skills. In addition, officers also participated in active-shooter scenarios, a news release said.

The center "allows our police officers to practice and improve their deescalation skills in real-time scenarios. In addition, this training provides officers the ability to see the results of effective communication.”
Koutoujian said his office is "proud to work with Chief Flaherty to once again ensure members of the Arlington Police Department can take part in this important interactive scenario-based training.
"This allows – and requires – officers to utilize the wide range of skills and techniques that are critical to effective policing, while giving trainers the opportunity to provide officers with real-time, constructive feedback that they can take right back onto their shifts.”
In 2022, the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office worked with 29 agencies to facilitate training through the mobile center, including the Arlington, Burlington, Lexington and Malden police departments, the release said.
