UPDATED May 30: Arlington and State Police are investigating after two pedestrians were struck by a motor vehicle Saturday, May 27.
At 10:18 a.m., Arlington Police and Fire responded to Stop & Shop, at 905 Mass. Ave., for a report of a motor vehicle crash involving multiple pedestrians. On arrival, Arlington officers found two people injured in the parking lot, and Arlington Police and Arlington Fire personnel began to administer emergency medical care.
The crash occurred after a 2005 Mercury Marquis driven by an 87-year-old man from Belmont struck an unoccupied parked car, which then hit a flower stand in front of the store. The flower stand struck the building, causing cosmetic damage, Boston.com reported. The parked vehicle is owned by a woman from Harwich, who didn’t report any injuries, police said in a statement. Police said that the driver then reversed the vehicle and struck pedestrians. The report was updated to pinpoint the number of pedestrians at two.
Arlington woman, Randolph man
Two pedestrians, a 61-year-old Arlington woman and a 70-year-old Randolph man, were transported to area hospitals, a May 27 news release said. The driver was also treated at the scene and transported to an area hospital.
The injuries to the Randolph man’s head and lower leg were “severe,” Sgt. Brian Fennelly told The Globe.
He declined to identify the driver and pedestrians, who were taken to Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington.
The driver holds a valid driver’s license, according to police.
Charges pending probe
This crash is under investigation by the Arlington Police Department. Access to the parking lot was disrupted for much of the rest of that afternoon. The Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section unit also responded to the scene to assist Arlington Police.
Pictures from a NewsCenter 5 photographer at the scene show the Mercury with heavy damage to its front end and front passenger's side door near a flower display outside of the grocery store.
Asked whether police are pursuing charges, Capt. Richard Flynn wrote May 30: "This matter remains under investigation by the APD and our partners at MSP. If there are charges taken out related to this incident, that information will be included in an updated press release."
A second vehicle, a 2022 Ford Escape, was also heavily damaged, according to a police report, with extensive redactions, received by YourArlington.
Stop & Shop personnel provided police with a CD with footage showing the incident, the report said.
