The Housing Corporation of Arlington (HCA) held its annual "Walk for Affordable Housing" fund-raiser from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 19, starting at the Jason Russell House (7 Jason St.). This was the corporation's 21st walk.

This event was a free, family-friendly event for community members interested in affordable housing for Arlington residents, a news release from HCA Executive Director Erica Schwarz says,

“The need for affordable housing is serious, but this event is about celebrating, advocating and having fun," Schwarz said in the release. "We welcome everyone in the community to come out to connect, laugh, walk, maybe even dance, while we deepen understanding of, and bring attention to, the ongoing and desperate need for affordable housing.”

The walk's course is a mile long down Mass. Ave. to Arlington Center and back. The day is expected to include live musical performances, food for purchase, housing advocacy opportunities and raffles. Last year's walk raised more than $48,000 through raffles and a donation box.

The social justice-focused group JP Honk band plans to play before and during the walk, the release says. Those who attend can also expect to see a performance from stiltwalker and juggler Danny Drake.

HCA plans to provide goodie bags and T shirts, the latter featuring an image of the solar-powered accessory dwelling unit that HCA plans to place behind one of its properties.

The raffle prizes to be awarded include original pieces from a local artist, plants from Derby Farms and gift certifcates from Assembly Sports Club, Cookie Time Bakery, Inspire Fitness and more. Raffle tickets are scheduled to be sold from noon to 1:30 p.m.

HCA is an Arlington-based nonprofit organization founded in 1986. It owns and manages 150 units of affordable housing throughout Arlington, provides social services to help families remain stable and helps tenants and other community members to become more engaged around issues they care about.

The Walk for Affordable Housing helps to highlight the work of HCA, as well as the need for affordable housing, as the current housing crisis continues to harm families and communities, officials say.
